Gesture-controlled in-ear headphone by Acconeer, Imagimob and OSM Group soon ready for commercialization

By

As announced last year, Acconeer, Imagimob and OSM Group are working together on gesture-controlled in-ear headphones. A working prototype will be available in Q1 2021, and the platform is soon ready for commercialization. Selected customers can now schedule exclusive demos of the prototype.

Gesture control is a perfect fit for in-ear headphones, since the earbud is small and not visible for the user, which makes physical buttons difficult to use. With the small footprint of Acconeer's A1 radar sensor, and the efficient AI software by Imagimob, it is possible to get it into a device as small as the in-ear headphone.

The project combines Imagimob AI SaaS solution and its world-leading expertise in Edge AI with Acconeer's high-accuracy, low-power radar sensor in a hardware designed and manufactured by OSM Group. The aim is to provide a solid platform targeting headphone companies looking to bring gesture-control into in-ear headphones to the market in a short time, while keeping accuracy and robustness high. However, the software and hardware platform developed in the project can also be used in a wide range of other electronic devices to implement gesture control.

Gesture control and touchless user interfaces has become a hot topic as the pandemic has swept over the world. The touchless gesture control market is primarily driven by factors such as rising hygiene consciousness and low maintenance cost. Touchless interfaces in addition to gesture controls are becoming widely popular as they provide the abilities to interact with devices without physically touching them.

The project is part of the strategic innovation program Smarter Electronic Systems – a joint investment by Vinnova, Formas and Swedish Energy Agency.

Imagimob and Acconeer are both showcasing at the all-digital CES 2021 January 11-14.

Customer story – Acconeer’s A1 radar sensor in Packwise SmartCap

By

Acconeer provides German start-up Packwise with radar sensor for their development of radar-based level measurement of IBC tanks. The interaction of two innovative solutions opens up new sustainable possibilities in container logistics, and the Dresden-based start-up Packwise and Acconeer are now working together. The A1 radar sensor is being used for the first time to measure fill level in a product targeting IBC tanks.

Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC) are mainly used in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. According to estimates there are 43 million plastic IBCs in circulation within the EU. In addition, there are almost three million steel IBCs. Series production of the Packwise Smart Cap will start this summer. The cap can be easily attached to the various models of IBC or steel drums. Because customers will have a better overview of stock levels, reordering can be automated and the logistics and preparation of containers can be improved. This enables increased and more efficient re-use of existing containers, which reduces the need to produce new containers.

"This is an innovative and absolutely forward-looking approach that Packwise is pursuing with the Smart Cap," says Lars Lindell, CEO of Acconeer. "This development supports the idea of a green, circular economy. We are delighted to be part of it now with our radar sensor technology." The two companies will continue to work closely together in the future.
